2008 Fishing Report
July 1, 2008 Perfect weather and perfect fishing. This week I had Peter and Ian on the boat for an amazing trip. Ian is 11 and an incredible fly caster. After a few casting tips he was hucking over 70ft of fly line. We began the morning fishing off of Greenwich for bass that were sipping sandeels on the surface. Ian blasted a cast at a sipping bass that nailed his white bunny fly. Ripping line from the reel at breakneck speed, the bass sped off like a bullet, Ian held tight but noticed the line had wrapped behind the reelseat. Capt Koop jump to help, but the bass was too much to hold back, Ian lost his grip while capt koop watched his brand new Orvis Helios 8wt with Vortex reel shoot from the boat like an arrow. Without hesitation, Capt Koop leaped into the water and grabed the but of the new rod and quickly handed it back to Ian. Ian made fast work to control the bass while Capt Koop swam to the back of the boat and hauled his soaked body back on board. Ian played the fish like a seasoned pro. Capt Koop was busy emptying his pockets of blackberry, wallet, car keys, checks, cash and 2 jolly ranchers. The blackberry was making gurgling noises as the reel drag screamed. The fish came to the boat after a nobel fight and Capt Koop landed him with a resounding yeeha. Ian and Capt Koop posed for a picture of the epic catch and then set her free. We landed about 15 more bass that day all good fights with perfect weather I've never met such a great angler that was 11 years old and hope that I have the opprotunity to fish with Ian and Peter again. It's a good thing that I work for a company that understands my passion for the outdoors. When I arrived at my office (Versus), the IT department handed me a new Blackberry and asked me to keep it warm and dry. June 26, 2008 What a great week of fishing.... BASS, BASS, and more BASS......... Bass on the surface (poppers), Bass (near the top), Bass on the bottom.... It just doesn't get any better than this...... This morning was terrific. Marty and Andy (father/son) slammed the bass (and 1 blue) fishing from Stamford to Greenwich. The weather was a perfect fish morn. Marty teased up several bass on crease flies, while Andy worked just below the surface with flashy clousers. This is the time of year to fish. Some open slots available over the holiday weekend. Give me a call to reserve. June 21, 2008 The ACTION continues. Sorry for the lack of reports. I slacking in my old age..... With the New Boat on its way (next week) and lots of fishing, it was getting difficult to find time to update the report. I will be making an effort to get the reports posted more consistently. TONS of BAIT around the western sound. The fish that are here are eating very well. Some very big bass have been hooked lately be fellow anglers around Greenwich and Stamford. With the full moon behind us maybe we can get back to some normalicy with tides and fish. Tried fishing late last week and night for some cinderworm action but came up dry in the two places that I went. Sand eels and menhaden are on the menu along with some anchovie mixed in. If the chovies stay in place like they did last year we should see and great push of Bonito in August. If anyone is looking for a great boat to fish the sound, montauk, or Block Island Sound, I'm seeling my completely tricked out 2005 Hydra-sports becuase i baought and 2008 Hydra-sports. These boats are AWESOME. If you want more info on the boat that I'm selling email me captkoop@saltyflies.com MAY 28, 2008 Nasty Weather, Excellent Fishing!!!!!! Yesterday we saw torential rains, lightning and high winds. This morning the rain and bang were over however, the winds were HOWLING. The Bass were selective and scattered at first light today. One cow did find our fly while fishing in Stamford (see below photo) Alex Au, hooked this beauty on a new Orvis Helos 8wt while fishing with his girlfriend Libby. The two of them battled winds and waves and were rewarded with this nice 15lber. Water clarity was dirty along CT coastline due to massive runoff from last nights rains. The remainder of the week is looking good with plenty of sun and lighter winds. Call us to book your charter. May 27, 2007 The Sound is alive with the Sound of FISH! Huge schools of Bass and Blues have been pushing Bunker, Herring, grass-shrimp, spearing, and sandeels all over the place. From the far-western Sound (Hempstead, and Mamaroneck) to the far Eastern Sound (The Race), the action is ON. The weather was perfect this past weekend and offered excellent shots at big fish (see photos below). Blues in the 10lb class are making the striper fishing a challenge, due to them attacking the same schools of bait and typically bitting through everything we use except for Tyger-wire. Far too often big bass will shy away from steel leaders and bite guards. It becomes a factor when deciding to either donate a fly to the jaws of the blue or hooking into a 20+lb bass. Hmmmmm, I'll donate............ May 7, 2008 The Striper Season has begun with an amazing push of fish into our area. All of the salt ponds and estuaries have bass and bait in place. The most productive areas are the Western Sound in Hempstead, Mamaroneck as well as the Housatonic river and the CT River. In addition to those locations Greenwich, Stamford, and Norwalk, Have seen a lot of bait and fish move in. If you are fishing the salt-ponds try clousers in natural colors. If you are fishing deeper water or the rivers try big Half/halfs in bright colors. Plenty of bait around with mature Bunker setting up for the spawn. Looking forward to a great season of fishing.
